While the economists claim the recession is over, I know for many of you times are still difficult. I also know that the spirit of generosity is alive and well at National City Christian Church. Your love of God through Christ and your love of the Church is amazing!!! Every gift, no matter the amount, is pleasing in God's sight and for that I give you and God thanks!

I'm excited abou this year's theme: What does the Lord require of you? How will I resond? Ibelieve Micha 6 calls us to a deeper commitment of our time, our resources, and ourselves beyond mere financial giving, but of our whole selves. How will you respond in 2010?

News from our Stewardship Minister

It has been a flurry of activity these last few weeks at National City Christian Church. Not only have we journeyed through Lent capped by a wonderful Easter celebration, but I've been focusing all of my time assisting auditors to complete the audit of the National City Christian Church Foundation for the board meeting held on April 25.

Why an audit? Simply stated, our by-laws require an audit of the Foundation. In addition, it is a way for us to report to the Board Members, you, potential donors, and the entire Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) our financial position in any given year.

What happens during an audit? The outside auditing firm examines our financial statements and looks at samples of transactions which occurred during the past year. The auditors assure that our transactions have been recorded correctly and will recommend any entries which need to be changed.

What are the results of the audit? The auditors express an opinion regarding how fairly we have state our financial statements. While there are different types of opinions, the best opinion to receive is that our statements are fairly represented. In other words this is called a "clean" audit.

In light of the circumstances of the last year how will we fare? The audit has been particularly challenging this year as the auditors are examining us with a fine-toothed comb. All of this is very good. As of the publication of the newsletter, I do not know the opinion they will give, but I'm confident that we are back on track. One of the most helpful tools the auditors will provide is a management letter indicating areas where we can improve our reporting and internal controls.

Thank you for your continued prayers and support as I traverse this new path of my ministry with you. The next time you see me, I will have said goodbye to the auditors...until next year (Thanks be to God!).

Steven Moore

I have called you friends

The theme for our Stewardship campaign was "I have called you friends." Throughout the Sundays of November we heard personal testimonies challenging us to think about our stewardship and giving to National City Christian Church. I want to thank Charlie Richardson, Shana Pereira, John Scott Williams and Bill and Keturah Raabe for their courage and witness to talk to us as friends.

Just as Jesus calls us friends, you responded to Jesus' call to be friends to each other and to the world. Your estimate of giving for 2009 is truly a "God-happening." Thus far we have received 80 pledges totaling $361,552. When combined with anticipated giving from others our grand total is $439,531. The gift range is from $15 - $20,400, making all of your gifts meaningful to God's work here on Thomas Circle and beyond.

For the privilege of serving as your associate minister I give thanks! Four your gifts and commitments for 2009 I say thanks! Our journey into a new year begins! Thanks be to God.

Emmanuel

“Hope is a star that shines in the night,
leading us on till the morning is bright.
When God is a child there’s joy in our song.
The last shall be first and the weak shall be strong,
and none shall be afraid.”
(When God is a Child, Chalice Hymn 132)

For many years in my previous church, we would sing “When God is a Child” during the lighting of the Advent candles. There are four stanzas themed Hope, Peace, Joy and Love. Each year a different stanza seems to touch me and this year I’m moved by the stanza with the theme of Hope.

As I talk with many of you and others in the neighborhood around our church, there is great worry and concern over the economy and jobs. When I talk to friends back in Indiana, they tell me that the Midwest is suffering with job losses and foreclosures. One phrase I usually here is, “I hope things will get better.”

As we enter this season of Advent – a season of waiting, longing and anticipation I hope that we can once again place our hope in the one who loves us so much that we have the gift of a baby. This baby named Jesus is also called Emmanuel—God is with us. In whatever darkness you may be experiencing this season turn to the star that shines in the night. If you aren’t living in darkness, then I HOPE you will be the light of Christ to the world!

Emmanuel,
Steven Moore
